From Labourer to Leader – Abz Hojok

Meet Abz, Credo’s Strategic Project Manager.

5 years ago Abz started at Credo as a casual Labourer. Now he’s our Strategic project Manager, a key leader and an integral part of our organisation.

When Abz started at Credo, he was running his own vending machine business in Melbourne. It was a good role but it didn’t offer him the challenge and fulfilment he needed.

“I was working on my own, not really talking to anyone. It was just boring work that didn’t get me excited… I’d never worked in construction before so I applied for a labouring role at Credo and started working 3-4 shifts a week.

After working as a casual labourer for 7 months, Abz progressed into a General-Hand role. It didn’t take long after that before his leadership and technical skills were further recognized by Credo’s team leaders.

“I came from a management background, working as a store manager and area manager for a communications company. I was good at managing people and I enjoyed leading teams.”

It was clear that Abz thrived as a leader and it was a natural progression for him to start utilising his leadership skills more within Credo. After 6 months as a general hand, Abz moved into an Installer role, Lead Installer and then State Manager (SIM) for Victoria and Tasmania.

“Before working at Credo I had never used a tool on a work site before. I think that is one of the best things about working here, anyone can progress within the company if you have the right attitude and apply yourself.”

After working as State Manager, a new position for Strategic Projects Manager was introduced at Credo. This position was a perfect fit for Abz as it combined State Manager duties with a focus on working closely on new projects and creating close relationships with new clients.

Now Abz is leading some of Credo’s most innovative projects. Including a huge project with a new client which will be released in a few months (we can’t say much yet, so follow us to stay up to date).

After Abz’s experience with moving up through different roles, he is assisting the business to develop and implement new incentives that make the process easier for others. Enabling employees to scale through the company if they show good work ethic and enthusiasm.

“We tell our team leaders to recognise hard workers who are interested in growing with the company. Those who want to move into roles with more responsibility don’t have to stay in the same role. If our workers are happier because they are in a role they enjoy, it’s better for them and better for us too.”

Abz’s journey within Credo is a prime example of how our employees can progress through the company and into roles that best suit their personality. Credo was a very different company 5 years ago and much of the reason why we have been growing and innovating so quickly is because of leaders like Abz and the teams we have created.
